The BPP Diner

One Month On, What is Filling that BPP Shaped Hole In Your Listening Habits?

Just wondering what everybody else is listening to in lieu of the BPP? Mainly, I'm listening to PRI's The World (used to listen on radio or on web until I discovered it as a podcast after BPP ended). As for the suggestions here and on the Facebook group, The Takeaway (a poor substitute for BPP, but better than nothing), Tell Me More (decent, depending on the subject), and CBC's the Current (always good to know what the Canadians are thinking). Too Beautiful to Live, well, I can rarely get through the seemingly endless commercial talk radio noise at the beginning of the show. (Sorry, Burbank - I know you chime in here from time to time, but that's MHO).

Mainly, I miss the free-for all that was The Most and The Ramble.

What is everybody else listening to?

Like you, more BBC.

Various podcasts:
You Bet Your Garden - once a week
Skepticast - once a week

And I'm listening to more music. I started today with Paul Kelly and finished with Ponytail. I'll always thank the BPP for introducing me to Ponytail.

Nothing. I was thinking about this yesterday, still noticing how nothing takes its place. The problem is, the main BPP listening I did was in the car, from the sat radio. Well, there really isn't much other choice there. 100 channels of crap for morning. I can have music, sure, but that's not what I want. So I tend to settle for vastly inferior Morning Edition. Every time I listen, Inskeep and Montagne get more and more annoying. The worst is when they actually try to talk to each other. This just doesn't work because Steve is in DC and Renee is at NPR West. It is simply not possible to have anywhere close to the same kind of feel.

Still an empty hole. Maybe in another year or two my 30-40 minute car commute will go away, in which case there won't be such an obvious hole. NPR is going to wait me out, presumably. They don't appear to think they have a missing gap in content.

I am finding the CBC much better than some of the offerings from the NPR. I lost interest with the Takeaway. I listen to The World, Fresh Aire but only if I know who/what is being discussed and the news I get is about the world. My son-in-law is in Haiti with as the director of USAID. I like to here as much as I can about the deprived nation. Where can I find Kelly and ponytail.

I guess I could listen to CBC on the sat radio. I dunno what they are playing at 7am eastern when I'm in the car. I'll put that on the list of things to try.

I'd also have to say "nothing". I have no shortage of great stuff to listen to (TBTL, BBC stuff, Guardian stuff, etc.), but none of it is daily news. For that I've only got ME, which is fine but can't hold my attention for more than a half hour or so. I'm actually surprised how much I miss the BPP this far on.

I podcast the previous evening's Rachel Maddow show, or an NPR weekend show I may have missed. Nothing comes close to replacing the BPP, though.

:: hangs head in shame :: I've given up news for the most part. I listen to Morning Edition on the way to work ... all 15 minutes of it. Then I listen to videos of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Google Video all day. When I feel like a break I check out CNN.com and MSNBC.com

I now know more about the pop culture of the 90s than I ever did when I lived in it...

pretty much nothing... I have listened to and liked the CBC's the Current on Sirius. The CBC seems to be more lively than NPR for news at least. It's cool to listen to their perspective.

I have to say this. The other week I was listening to Neil Conan trying to be funny talking about movies with someone whose name I instantly forgot. It made me want to cry remembering how good the BPP was....

I have been listening to the CBC in the mornings, but mostly, I have been walking around with a hole in my life. A few times in the last month, I have caught myself thinking "How would this story been reported on the BPP?" BPP Olympic coverage would have been awesome!

I'm hoping a movie deal is in the works...

Two-plus months on... still missing The Ramble and especially The Most, big time.

Cinder: thanks for the tip on Rachel Maddow - I find her commentary to be bitingly insightful. While nothing can ever fully replace the BPP, the podcast of her show has taken it's place as must-listen-to on the top of my daily podcast play list.

Anyone else have anything new they are listening to?
