The BPP Diner

Where the show continues

I may live in Austin now and attend UT, but I am not a Longhorn fan (burnt orange gives me hives). No, my blood runs scarlet and black. My Texas Tech Red Raiders are on the verge of breaking the Sooner-Longhorn ceiling in the Big XII South. Sure, there are other implications, but winning the conference division is #1. Not too many other teams have done it. (I think only Texas A&M did it once or twice--hard to believe now.)

It's never easy beating Texas for a number of reasons( the bad calls can be amazingly timely). Tech has to overcome the adversity. It's time.

Hit'em Wreck'em Texas Tech!!!!

Pinch me, I must be dreaming. Texas Tech #2 in the nation? I hope it last longer than a week. We have never in the history of the earth beaten Texas and Oklahoma in the same year. Oklahoma State is no pushover either.

I tell you, that was an unbelievable game. I thought it was over when the ball was tipped up and looked like a Longhorn came down with it. But Crabtree catching that pass, breaking that tackle . . . I went nuts. If only he took one second longer to get in the end zone :)

It might just be me, but I saw a little less burnt orange around campus today--a little less swagger :) I did see a guy in a crisp-looking Alabama shirt (probably another grad student).

Ten years ago, practically to the day, I was in the student section of Jones Stadium cheering a crazy Tech win over Texas. The score went back and forth. There were plenty of Texas fans in the section. They would shake their keys at us when they went ahead (now that was brave or just jerkiness). We would do the same when we went ahead. That was an amazing win, but nothing compared to what those students experienced Saturday night. I envy them in a way. Charging the field is nothing. There was two occasions against A&M when the fans did special things with the goal post, like parading it around the A&M team bus and then through campus (legend has it), and another time, they carried it across the field into the A&M fan section (which caused a bit of a riot). Hence, now the goal posts collapse at a moments notice. Good times.

I wish I had ESPN! It did have all the fixins for a Cal-Stanford finish :) I don't think it will have quite the staying power, though. The Goin' Band from Raiderland was smart enough to stay off the field.

Here's the Red Raider Radio call of the end of the game--from TD to the end of that damn last second! They go NUTS!!!! I didn't hear them the first time around because I was too busy going NUTS!!!

Onward and upwards. OSU, you're next. Hit'em Wreck'em Texas Tech!!!!

Okay, I had a week off and I'm ready for some serious winning-the-Big-12-South football. This is certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Who knows when all the stars will align like this again. At the moment I'm just riding the wave.

Well, to answer your question, Matthew, I tend to just go to the bowl games within 3 hours driving distance. In the past, that was the Houston Bowl (or the latest name) and the Alamo Bowl. I didn't even go to the Cotton Bowl (over 4 hours away). Hence, I usually experience the more successful seasons via TV. And that's where I'll be Jan. 8th. Of course, once Texas Tech wins the National Championship, the world is very likely to end. Before Obama's Inauguration . . . that would suck.

Best case scenario (but still pretty scary): I'll be so blinded by euphoria, I won't even notice the Cubs winning the World Series next year :)
